a start at the heart

for awhile i thought about the project’s first intersection.  should i start in my hood, near a favorite hang-out, city hall?  i decided to head to city center and poke around and i knew it as soon as i saw it:  13th and broadway.  city center BART, de lauer’s, the only taxi stand in oakland and the tribune tower.  it’s labor day and downtown is deserted except for the Oakland Black Caucus feed-the-needy BBQ, a service provided on every federal holiday.  between 300-600 needy are fed.  today was oakland with no make-up on….no commuters, no bustling markets.  but as usual i meet friendly people like Fasil, the new owner of De Lauer’s Newsstand and a couple of Sikh taxi-drivers.  here is some of what i saw…….
